ABOUT
Who is Edward Walker?
As it states on the main page, "he is a character in M. Night Shyamalan's film The Village, and he is portrayed by William Hurt." Mr. Walker is the apparent leader of this village, which is set in the late 1800s and is isolated by woods that are said to contain "mystical creatures," or "Those We Don't Speak Of." He is the wife of Tabitha, as well as the father of Kitty, Ivy, and several younger girls.
Why Edward Walker?
I believe Mr. Walker to be an extremely important and often admirable key character in this movie. It is obvious that his daughters love him dearly, and the other villagers trust him, follow him, and look to him for comfort and guidance. One may look at him in many different lights, as there is also the grieving, tortured side of him, and he is a very complex character--even more than one may see on the outside alone.
Why Yes, I Have Risked?
Many of the most beautiful, poetic, and thought-provoking lines are spoken by Mr. Walker, and one of my favorites is when he says, "Yes, I have risked, I hope I am always able to risk everything for the just and right cause." I feel that it speaks for several levels of his personality, and out of all the quotes I love, this one seems to fit the best. Others include:
"Do not fret. You are fearless in a way that I shall never know."
"The world moves for love. It kneels before it in awe."
[continuation of the "Yes, I have risked" quote] "...If we did not make this decision, we could never again call ourselves innocent, and that in the end is what we have protected here; innocence! That, I'm not ready to give up!"
"It is all that I can give you...It is all that I can give you."
"His will to live is very strong."
"We are grateful for the time we have been given."
"The moment I heard my daughter's vision had finally failed her, and that she would forever be blind, I was sitting in that very chair. I was so ashamed."
